It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dwight James Lomax, age 80, on October 7, 2026.
Dwight was born on June 2, 1946, at the Charm House in Clarkesville to Mary and Crawford Lomax.
From his humble beginnings as a skinny kid growing up in Mud Creek, Dwight went on to build a truly remarkable life defined by service, leadership, faith, friendship, and family.
Dwight had a deep love for his country and a lifelong commitment to military service. Dwight enlisted in the Army at age 17, and on his 18th birthday, he boarded a ship for Germany, where he served for three years. He continued his military career in the Army Reserve, rising to the rank of Sergeant Major during his 25 years of service.
While serving in the Army Reserve, Dwight pursued higher education and earned both bachelor's and master's degrees. He also began a career with the Georgia Department of Corrections, where he rose through the ranks to become Chief Probation Officer before retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. Even after retiring from public service, Dwight’s passion for his work never waned. He helped launch a successful private probation enterprise, leading its northern Georgia operations for another 10 years with the same leadership and dedication that defined his life.
In retirement, Dwight especially enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and most of all, spending time with his family and many friends. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cornelia and a dedicated member of Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge, where he was honored with his 50-Year Master Mason Award in 2025. He was also a member of the Mountaineer Shrine Club, where he served as president. Dwight was a past commander of American Legion Post No. 84 and a member of both the Toccoa Elks Lodge and Grant-Reeves VFW Post 7720.
More than his accomplishments, Dwight will be remembered for the relationships he built and the lives he touched. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose kindness, generosity, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Dwight is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Cynthia; his daughter, Tracey Burton (Wesley); his sons, D.J. Lomax and Kyle Sewell (Jennifer); his brothers, Doyle Lomax, Randy Lomax (Kay), and Shannon Lomax (Karen); ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 11am at McGahee-Griffin & McEntire Funeral Home, 175 VFW Post Road, Cornelia, GA 30531. A graveside service will follow at VFW Memorial Park, 1492 Smith Loop Road, Demorest, GA 30535 with military honors provided by the Grant Reeves Veterans Honor Guard. Masonic rites will be provided by the Mount Airy Masonic Lodge #141 F& A.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Dwight's memory to Shriners Children's Greenville, Attn: Office of Philanthropy, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
