Frankie Edward Smith, age 75, of Demorest, Georgia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Born at the historic "Charm House" in Clarkesville, Georgia, on January 7, 1951, he was a son of the late William Isaac "Bill" Smith and Sadie Elizabeth Chitwood Smith.

A man whose life was defined by service, integrity, and unwavering dedication to others, Frankie devoted nearly five decades to protecting the citizens of Cornelia and the surrounding communities. At just 17 years of age, he answered the call to serve by becoming a volunteer firefighter with the Cornelia Fire Department in 1968. His passion for the fire service soon became his life's work as he joined the department full-time in 1972. In April of 1976, he was promoted to Fire Chief, a position he faithfully held for more than 40 years while accumulating nearly 45 years of full-time service.

Under Chief Smith's steady leadership, the Cornelia Fire Department grew alongside the city it proudly served. His vision, wisdom, and commitment helped build a stronger department capable of meeting the needs of a growing community. As a testament to his remarkable legacy, the City of Cornelia honored him by naming its north fire station in his memory, recognizing the countless hours, sacrifices, and leadership he invested throughout his distinguished career. Across Habersham and Banks Counties, Frankie will long be remembered not only as a respected Fire Chief, but as a mentor, teacher, and trusted friend to generations of firefighters whose lives and careers were shaped by his guidance.

While his professional accomplishments were many, Frankie's greatest joy was found at home. He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud and doting Papa who treasured every moment spent with his beloved granddaughters. His family was the center of his world, and the love he shared with them will remain a lasting legacy.

In his spare time, Frankie found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed camping with his family, tending his garden, and creating beautiful woodworking projects with his own hands. His quiet strength, humble spirit, and willingness to help anyone in need reflected the character of the man so many admired.

Above all, Frankie was a man of deep and abiding faith. A faithful member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Baldwin, he served as a deacon for many years, faithfully ministering to his church family and seeking to honor the Lord through his life and service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sara Whitfield; and his brothers, Tommy Smith, Arthur R.A. Smith, Junior Faye Smith, and Earl Smith.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Ruth Marcus Smith of Demorest; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Tonya Smith; cherished granddaughters, Mary Ellen Smith and Rachel Smith; brother, Bobby J. Smith; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of treasured friends who will forever remember his kindness, leadership, and unwavering example.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2026, at Mountain View Baptist Church in Baldwin, Georgia, with Rev. James Harvey officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Rev. Greg Purcell officiating at the graveside.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening and again on Friday from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m., prior to the service.
