George Randolph “Dan” Burke, age 87, of Clarkesville, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
Born in Clarkesville, Georgia, on October 13, 1938, Dan was the second of eight children born to the late Robert Taylor Burke and Louise Holcomb Burke. He grew up in Habersham Mills—a place he proudly described throughout his life as “the best place on earth.” Those early years shaped much of the man Dan became. He shared an exceptionally close bond with his parents, brothers, and sisters, and throughout his life, family remained at the very center of his heart. Holiday gatherings and celebrations with his extended family were occasions he always treasured.
Dan’s strong work ethic began at an early age when he shined shoes at Smith’s Barbershop. That childhood job became a lifelong trademark. Even into his final years, Dan took great pride in keeping his shoes shined to a pristine finish, and he was always ready to shine a pair for a family member or friend as well. It was one of the many little things that reflected his attention to detail and the pride he took in presenting himself as the true Southern gentleman he was.
At just 18 years old, Dan answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army in 1957 during the Cold War. Following basic training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia, he was stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany, where he spent 17 months serving as a wheel and track mechanic. There, he worked on a military fleet that included Jeeps and ¾-ton, 2½-ton, and 5-ton trucks. His military service remained a source of great pride throughout his life.
Dan later made his career with Georgia Power Company, where he worked faithfully for many years before retiring as a Plant Operator.
October was always a special month for Dan. Not only was it his birthday month, but on October 8, 2026, he and the love of his life, Peggy Hill Burke, would have celebrated an extraordinary 60 years of marriage. Dan enjoyed telling folks that he “got Peggy at the hardware store.” There was some truth behind the joke: the two started "courting" while they were both working at Reeves Hardware in Clarkesville. From that beginning grew a love story that spanned six decades, filled with devotion, family, laughter, memories, and a lifetime spent side by side.
Dan was happiest when he was doing something with his hands or surrounded by the people he loved. He had an avid interest in automobiles—especially Ford Mustangs—as well as tractors and gardening. Each spring, his beloved Farmall 140 tractor went to work preparing a large vegetable garden filled with corn, tomatoes, okra, squash, potatoes, cucumbers, and more. When harvest time came, it became a family affair with everyone pitching in. Dan found tremendous joy not only in growing the vegetables but in sharing the fruits of his labor with family, friends, and neighbors.
He also loved taking what he affectionately called “field trips”—Dan’s code for getting away and enjoying some of his favorite things. There were fishing trips with his Georgia Power friends, NASCAR races with his best friend and son, and trips to the Smoky Mountains with Peggy, church friends, and family. Each trip became another story to tell and another memory to treasure.
A true automobile enthusiast, Dan possessed an amazing ability to identify the year, make, and model of nearly any automobile from the 1930s through the 1960s. Over the years, he owned several memorable Mustangs, including a 1966 Shelby GT350 and a 1969 Shelby GT500. But the car he held onto through the years was his 1966 Mustang GT 2+2. Watching its restoration alongside his son, Dean, brought Dan tremendous joy, and the drives they shared in that Mustang became priceless father-and-son memories that will never be forgotten.
Following a broken hip at Christmas in 2025 and subsequent surgery, Dan spent the final ten months of his life at StoryPoint Assisted Living, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, allowing him to be closer to Dean and his family. It did not take long for the staff there to learn about Habersham County, Habersham Mills, his family, his cars, and his many life experiences—because Dan loved sharing his stories in the special way that only he could. He became deeply loved by those who cared for him, and they affectionately described him as “a true Southern gentleman.” Few descriptions could have suited him better.
While Peggy was the great love of Dan’s life, the apple of his eye was undoubtedly his granddaughter, Briley Burke. Their relationship was something truly special. Whether they were playing a competitive game of Tic-Tac-Toe or Checkers or enjoying their Sunday night FaceTime calls, Dan treasured every moment with her. He loved doting on Briley and making sure she had a little spending money for candy at the Old Sautee Store. He faithfully saved his spare change in a Folgers coffee can, and whenever he saw her, that collection of coins was hers. To most, it may have simply been pocket change; to Briley, it will forever represent the immeasurable love of her grandfather.
Dan was a lifelong and faithful member of Habersham Baptist Church, where he served the Lord as a Deacon and formerly as a Royal Ambassador Leader. His faith, his church, and the friendships he formed there were important parts of his life. He was also a member of Clarkesville Masonic Lodge #325 F. & A.M.
Dan Burke lived a full life—one rooted in faith, family, hard work, service to his country, and a genuine appreciation for the simple blessings God gave him. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, a loyal friend, a veteran, a storyteller, a gardener, a car enthusiast, and, through it all, a gentleman. His stories of Habersham Mills, his perfectly shined shoes, his “field trips,” his garden, that familiar Farmall tractor, the Mustang, and the Folgers can filled with change are now precious pieces of a life that his family will carry with them forever.
In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby, Ronald, & Willard Burke; sisters, Florence Burke Wikle and Ann Burke Appling.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Peggy Burke; son & daughter-in-law, Dean & Cassi Burke; brothers & sisters-in-law, Hugh & Hilda Burke; Lee & Carol Burke; sisters-in-law, Anne Burke, Doris Hill, & Ruth Goss; grandchildren, Brooklynn Lucas, Braden Lucas, & Briley Burke; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, & a host of friends.
Dan’s wishes were to be cremated.
