Lucile Chitwood Smith, age 100, of Cornelia, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Born in Banks County, Georgia, on September 18, 1926, Lucile was a daughter of the late William Oscar Chitwood and Mary Elizabeth Smith Chitwood. Blessed with a remarkable century of life, she witnessed generations of change while remaining steadfast in the values that mattered most to her—faith, family, hard work, and caring for those she loved.

Lucile was a devoted and hardworking lady throughout her life. She was formerly employed with Chicopee Manufacturing and later retired from the Nutrition Department at South Habersham High School following many years of dedicated service. Through her work, she touched the lives of countless students and coworkers and was known for her dependable and caring spirit.

A woman of strong Christian faith, Lucile was a faithful member of Camp Creek Baptist Church for many years. She loved her church family and remained devoted to her faith even after her health no longer allowed her to attend services regularly. Her faith was a source of strength throughout her long and blessed life.

Lucile found great joy in the simple things that made a house a home. She loved cooking and baking for those around her and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, crafting, working word searches, and taking walks outdoors. Her hands were rarely idle, and many of the things she lovingly made through the years became treasured reminders of her care and creativity.

Above all else, Lucile treasured her family. Nothing brought her greater happiness than time spent surrounded by those she loved. Over the course of her 100 years, she was blessed to see her family grow through several generations, including the anticipation of another great-great-grandchild. Her long life leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, faith, perseverance, and precious memories that will continue to be cherished for generations to come.

In addition to her parents, Lucile was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Buford Smith; brother, Billy Chitwood; and sisters, Grace Mace, Irene Cantrell, Edith Watts, Annie Loudermilk, and Susie Mae Chitwood Ausburn.

Survivors include her children, Buford Lynn Smith, William Glenn Smith (Carolyn), and Daniel Jerome Smith (Dr. James Mellichamp); grandchildren, Chad Smith (Summer), Deana Rider (Wayne), Amanda Mitchell (Jeff), and Felicia Ward; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, with another great-great-grandchild on the way; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Camp Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Burrell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Camp Creek Baptist Church from 12:00 noon until the service hour on Saturday.
