Sara Kay Massey, age 85, of Cornelia, Georgia, took her Heavenly flight home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of love, kindness, generosity, and a lifetime of precious memories that will forever be treasured by those who knew and loved her.
Born in Commerce, Georgia, on June 13, 1941, Sara was a daughter of the late James Hubert Mealor and Reba Lucille Massey Mealor. On June 9, 1963, she married the love of her life, Billy Cody Massey, in a beautiful ceremony at Cabin Creek Baptist Church. Together, they built a life centered around faith, family, and devotion to one another. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, and the home they established became a place where countless memories were made and cherished.
Sara dedicated over 30 years of faithful service as a secretary at Cornelia Elementary School before her retirement. To the many students, teachers, and families whose lives she touched, Sara was much more than a familiar face in the school office. She possessed a servant's heart and a special gift for recognizing the needs of others. Whether it was a child who needed a little extra encouragement, a family facing difficult circumstances, or someone in the community who simply needed a helping hand, Sara quietly made it her mission to see that those needs were met. She never sought recognition or praise for her kindness; helping others was simply who she was. Her compassion and generosity left a lasting impression on countless lives throughout the community.
Outside of her work, Sara found great joy in the simple blessings of life. She loved tending to her beautiful flower gardens, traveling with family and friends, and enjoying camping trips to the North Georgia mountains, especially Hiawassee. Vogel State Park held a particularly special place in her heart, as it was a favorite family destination during the childhood years of her two sons, James and Joel. Those treasured camping trips, filled with laughter, togetherness, and wonderful adventures, became some of the family's most cherished memories. What may have seemed like ordinary moments at the time became extraordinary gifts that her sons will carry in their hearts forever.
Of all the titles Sara held throughout her life, one of her most treasured was that of "Ahma," the affectionate name given to her by her beloved grandchildren. Being a grandmother and great-grandmother brought her immeasurable happiness. She delighted in her family, celebrated their accomplishments, and treasured every opportunity to be together. Her love was steady, genuine, and unconditional, and the influence of her caring heart will continue to be felt for generations to come.
Sara's Christian faith was an important foundation of her life. She was an active and devoted member of First Baptist Church of Cornelia for many years, where she enjoyed the fellowship of her church family. Through her quiet acts of service, gentle spirit, and willingness to help those around her, Sara demonstrated a life of faith expressed through love and compassion.
Though her earthly journey has come to an end, Sara's beautiful legacy will live on through the family she loved so dearly, the friendships she treasured, and the countless lives made brighter because she cared. Her family finds comfort in knowing that her Heavenly flight has carried her into the presence of her Lord and Savior and to a joyful reunion with loved ones who have gone before her.
In addition to her parents, Sara was preceded in death by her loving husband, Billy Cody Massey; brother, Jerry J. Mealor; and sister, Pearlene Mealor Wood; brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Bobby L. Massey & Jeri Massey.
Survivors include her beloved sons and daughters-in-law, James and Debbie Franklin Massey and Joel and Rebecca Jones Massey; cherished grandchildren, Austin and Rebekka Massey, Ashby and Nicole Massey, Avery and Destiny Massey, Lon Massey, and Carter Massey; precious great-grandchildren, Cody James Massey and Carlee Nicole Massey; as well as other relatives and dear friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 17, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Cornelia, Georgia. Interment will follow in Level Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, prior to the service.
Flowers are graciously accepted; however, in keeping with Mrs. Sara’s loving and generous spirit, it was her heartfelt wish that memorial donations be made to Cornelia Elementary School, c/o Habersham Board of Education, P.O. Box 70, Clarkesville, GA. 30523 to help provide for children in need. Through these gifts, her legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication to the children of her community will continue to touch young lives for years to come.
