Valerie Margaret Wragg, age 82, of Alto, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, February 14, 2026.

Born on June 12, 1943, in Carlisle, Valerie was the beloved daughter of the late Ronald Batey and Peggy O'Donohue Batey. From her earliest days, she carried with her the warmth and charm of her English roots, a warmth that would become her signature throughout her life.

Valerie never met a stranger. She loved people, animals, neighbors, and passersby alike, greeting everyone affectionately as “pet.” A true social butterfly, she had a gift for making others feel seen and valued. She had an extraordinary memory for birthdays and ages, never forgetting to celebrate the milestones of those she loved. Her kitchen was often filled with the comforting aromas of home-cooked meals, as she found great joy in cooking for her family and friends.

Above all, Valerie cherished her family. She adored her children, treasured her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and held a special place in her heart for her little brothers. Her love was constant, generous, and unwavering.

Valerie faithfully served the City of Gainesville Schools for many years, retiring after a dedicated career that reflected her strong work ethic and caring spirit. She poured the same compassion into her professional life that she gave so freely in her personal one.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Stephen Wragg, and her brother, Jeffery Batey.

She leaves behind a legacy of love in her surviving family: her son and daughter-in-law, David Wragg (Kathy); her daughter and son-in-law, Jackie Davidson (Michael); her brother, Eric Batey; her grandchildren, Christine Garner (Clint), Stephanie Farina (John Michael), Matthew Wragg (Kelly), and Kayla Millwood (Austin); and her cherished great-grandchildren, Emmie and Willow Garner, Walker and Archer Farina, Mason and Dax Wragg, and Liam and Lawson Millwood. She is also survived by her lifelong friends, Doreen Morters, Aletta “Tokkie” Drake, and Penny Fowler, along with many other relatives and dear friends.

The family extends their deepest appreciation to all of Valerie’s caregivers since 2023 for their compassionate and devoted care.

Valerie’s life was a beautiful testament to kindness, hospitality, and steadfast love. She will be remembered for her bright spirit, her tender heart, and the way she made everyone feel like family.

A celebration of Valerie’s life will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 2026, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & McEntire Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Collett officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until the service hour on Thursday at the funeral home.
