Obituary

Woodrow Free, Jr., age 86, of Clarkesville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of those who will forever cherish his memory.

Born and raised in the Batesville Community, Woodrow was the son of the late Woodrow Free, Sr., and Rosalie Sutton Free. A man of strong character, a generous heart, and a welcoming spirit, Woodrow lived his life with a genuine love for others. He never met a stranger and had a way of making people feel at home wherever he went.

Woodrow was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church, and a Deacon. He proudly served his community through his membership in Disabled American Veterans Chapter 15, American Legion Post 84, Clarkesville Masonic Lodge #325 F&A.M., and the Habersham County Honor Guard. He served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964 and continued his military service for 22½ years in the Army National Guard, demonstrating a deep commitment to his country and fellow servicemen. He also spent many years working in the textile industry, where he built a life through hard work and dedication.

Outside of his service and work, Woodrow enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life special. He loved going to the beach, spending time with family and friends, and watching a good football game, especially when he had something to fuss about with the television! His spirited personality, quick wit, and love for conversation made him a memorable presence to all who knew him. Above all, Woodrow treasured his family, and the love he shared with them will remain a lasting part of his legacy.

In addition to his parents, Woodrow was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughters, Madison Free and Madalyn Free, and his daughter-in-law, Heather Free.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Patricia Canup Free; his sons, Chris Free and Michael Free (Faith); his brother, Frank Free (Phyllis); his sisters, Carol Warren and Karen Franklin (Johnny); and his cherished grandchildren, Simon Free (Morgen), Lillian Free, Elliott Free, William Free, and Mercy Free. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will continue to hold his memory close to their hearts.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & McEntire with Dr. Kenneth Franklin officiating. Interment will follow in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Larry Free officiating and military honors provided by the Grant Reeves Veterans Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Woodrow’s memory to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 15, 980 N. Main Plaza Drive, Box 104, Cornelia, GA 30531, or American Legion Post 84, 241 Larkin Street, Cornelia, GA 30531.
